Winter Fishing July – September:
Many rivers and lakes remain open during the winter season and flyfishing can be excellent targeting the great number of large well conditioned fish which migrate to spawn. Lake edges, stream mouths and rivers all offer good fly fishing with nymphs and deeply sunk wet flies and lures.

Did you know:
Lake Wanaka is central to a fascinating area of southern New Zealand, excavated by massive glaciers more than 10,000 years ago, Lakes Wanaka and Hawea lie side by side, joined by a sliver of land known as The Neck, which is just 1000 metres wide, the glaciers were once joined. Lake Wanaka is the source of New Zealand's largest river, the Clutha. Lake Hawea feeds into the Hawea River, which joins the Clutha at Albert Town. Ringed by pebbly beaches and with magnificent views to the surrounding peaks, both lakes offer a variety of adventures, especially during the long, hot months of summer.

Fishing Report July, 2009:

The winter is now with us with plenty of snow on the mountains. It is looking like being an excellent ski season. The last few days have been cool with morning frosts but fine with the occasional sun breaking through. Fishing is now mainly limited to the Lakes and Hawea and Clutha Rivers. The most popular locations are mouths of the rivers flowing into the lakes.

Fishing these with a streamer is the most productive method for the fly fisherman. Spin fishing and boat trolling these areas is also very popular. Evening fishing the Clutha River is also good value for the hardy fisherman.

With little fishing just now it is time to reflect on the past season.

October saw some good fishing in both Lakes Wanaka and Hawea . For the fly fisherman streamers and nymphs were again productive. Spin fishing was also very good on these waters.

At river mouths and small areas where fishing is permitted at this time on rivers flowing into the lakes there were good quantities of rainbows.

For the beginning of the season in November when conditions were suitable some excellent catches were had in the rivers. The lakes were low and fishing well for both fly and spin fishermen. The weather later in the month and early December was for the most part good, the rivers were on the odd occasion discolored but when suitable fished very well. Fish were taking dry flies on the lake edges and a sheltered bay can always be found. This proved as usual to be an excellent alternative and very productive.

December saw some rain at times and this raised the rivers and made fly fishing difficult.

Wind also made it difficult for fly fishermen and also for boat fishing.

Those anglers who were prepared to be adaptable still achieved a great deal of success.

January was a mixture of good and bad weather with plenty of wind but fishing was very good with dry flies, humpy patterns being the most successful, and on a bad day streamers and nymphs also getting results.

February was at times difficult for the fly fisherman with some windy weather; dry fly fishing however was very productive when possible. Streamers and Nymphs were once again good value.

Fishermen that were prepared to be adaptable were able to experience good fly fishing on Lake edges with humpy patterns again and cicadas.

March was once again windy with rivers and streams mostly in good fishing condition.

Dry flies were still very productive on lake edges even on windy days.

Streamers were also a good option in the rivers and lakes.

In April as is usual white bait and streamer patterns were very productive at the river mouths. Dry fly fishing was still going well on the lakes.

Early May saw some very bad weather with swollen rivers and the lakes at a high level making fishing difficult. Later in the month the rivers were clearing again and large numbers of browns had made their way up the rivers for spawning and again this looks good for the future.

Apart from some difficult conditions I found it a very successful season.    end report July, 2009:    email with any comments   ... back to top
